As a western scientist who has conducted much of my research abroad, I've become well aware of how my presence is perceived and received by the people who live in the places I work.
I try to connect with the communities who are generous in allowing me to conduct research near their homes through interactive visits with school children and knowledge exchanges with fishers.

Science communication
I also make efforts to translate my research to non-scientific audiences through various styles of public talks at a diversity of venues.

Career talk with CIRES Science Pathways program (based at CU Boulder) for students at MSU Denver community college. In these talks, I describe my path to becoming a scientist with the intention of resolving misconceptions about graduate programs and careers in science.
